12 Months Before the Wedding – Big Picture Planning
- Celebrate your engagement – omg soak this moment UP!
- Set a wedding budget
- Draft a guest list
- Pick your venue + secure your date
- Choose your wedding party (or at least start thinking about it)
Pro Tip: Use my Wedding Guest List Calculator to see how guest count impacts your budget instantly.
Even if you have 18 months, this 12-month checklist works — just start earlier.
11 Months Before the Wedding – Vendors & Dress Guide
- Book key vendors that are important to you, typically: photographer, videographer, caterer, planner
- Start dress shopping – you most likely know the style you want, but try at least one style that’s out of your comfort zone – it may surprise you
- Research accommodations for guests
- Create your wedding website
Venues and vendors book up 12+ months out, so if you wait, you could end up paying double!
10 Months Before the Wedding – Entertainment & Attire
- Finalize your wedding dress order (PS. I recommend getting the dress to arrive minimum 1 month before your actual wedding date.)
- Book entertainment (band/DJ)
- Start bridesmaid dress shopping – are you going for the exact same style or let your girls pick?
- Begin engagement photo session planning
9 Months Before the Wedding – Save-the-Dates & Beauty
- Order save-the-dates
- Plan honeymoon ideas – yes – plan this far in advance
- Schedule hair + makeup trial
- Book officiant
8 Months Before the Wedding – Florals & Rentals
- Reserve rental items (tables, chairs, linens)
- Choose florist – are you doing faux or real or both?
- Finalize bridal party attire
- Begin pre-marital counseling (if applicable).
Regardless if you are doing pre-marital counselling or not, I highly recommend every couple to invest in your marriage and read one of my favorite books: “The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work” by John M. Gottman
7 Months Before the Wedding – Registry & Catering
- Book transportation (limos, shuttles, etc.)
- Start registry
- Schedule tasting with caterer – this can be one of the funnest tasks and you can turn this into a date for your and your future husband!
- Secure rehearsal dinner venue
If you have less than 12 months, compressing this into a 6-month wedding planning checklist is still doable.
6 Months Before the Wedding – Invitations & Décor
- Order invitations
- Plan honeymoon details (book flights + hotels)
- Choose ceremony + reception music – you don’t realize just how many songs for each “event” you need to consider and choose!
- Finalize décor vision
🎯 My Wedding Budget Spreadsheet keeps travel, décor, and vendor costs organized so you don’t overspend.
5 Months Before the Wedding – Beauty & Cake

4 Months Before the Wedding – Details & Rings
- Finalize ceremony details
- Order favors + signage. Favors are not a must and most guests forget about them anyways, but if you want them, sort them out now.
- Buy wedding bands
- Confirm hotel room blocks
Did you know? The $74B wedding industry thrives on brides forgetting details—don’t let that be you.
3 Months Before the Wedding – Timeline & Legalities
- Mail invitations (If you don’t do this now, you’re already behind)
- Schedule dress fittings – make sure that dress still fits!
- Order marriage license (check local laws)
- Finalize wedding day timeline
Stress-free brides use my 12-Month Wedding Timeline Spreadsheet. It maps out deadlines so you never miss a key step.
2 Months Before the Wedding – Seating & Final Walkthrough
- Confirm headcount with caterer
- Create seating chart (some brides chose not to have a seating chart, but I highly recommend having one – saves your guests from confusion and any awkward moments).
- Confirm ceremony readings + music
- Do final walk-through with venue
If you have less than 3 months, compressing this into a 3-month wedding planning checklist is also possible! Just sort your priorities and non-negotiables and take out the extras that really don’t matter.
1 Month Before the Wedding – Final Prep
- Pick up wedding dress & groom’s suit
- Confirm all vendor details
- Create wedding day emergency kit
- Break in wedding shoes – this is an absolute must!
2 Weeks Before the Wedding – RSVPs & Honeymoon Prep

FAQs About Wedding Planning Checklists
Q: What should be on a 12-month wedding planning checklist?
A: Your 12-month guide should include booking venues, hiring vendors, dress shopping, ordering stationery, and setting your budget. Breaking tasks down month by month prevents overwhelm.
Q: Is 12 months enough time to plan a wedding?
A: Yes! Most brides plan within 12 months. As long as you stick to a timeline, you’ll stay on track. The key is to book your venue + major vendors first, then handle smaller details as you go.
Q: Can I plan a wedding in 6 months instead of 12?
A: Yes! A 6-month wedding planning checklist simply condenses the same key steps into a tighter timeline. The most important thing is to book your venue and major vendors first, then handle details like stationery, décor, and attire on a faster schedule. With clear priorities and fewer extras, planning in 6 months is completely doable.
Q: What’s the difference between a wedding checklist and a wedding timeline?
A: Wedding checklist is what to do, while a wedding timeline is when to do it. The checklist lists tasks, and the timeline breaks them into monthly steps.
