Month 1: Set the Foundation Fast
1) Set Your Budget + Guest List
Before anything else, sit down with your partner and decide on two key things:
- How much you want to spend
- Who absolutely needs to be there
These two things shape every decision. Keep your guest list intentional.
Honestly, thank goodness my fiancé and I were totally aligned on these two things.
We spent a lot of time upfront talking through how much we were actually comfortable spending — especially since we were paying for the wedding ourselves and planning to buy our first home in the same year.
If you’re in a similar boat, make sure you’re both crystal clear on your wedding budget and where the money’s coming from. Are you covering it all? Are parents pitching in? Having that conversation early on saves so much stress later.
Personal Tip: We used my Guest Priority Calculator to rank our list without guilt. Gamechanger.
2) Choose Your Date + Book Venue
Look at venues with built-in perks: tables, chairs, or an in-house coordinator. Off-season or weekday weddings = more availability.
3) Book the Big Vendors
Your non-negotiables (venue, photographer, caterer, DJ/band) should be booked this month.
Our venue and photographer were the first two non-negotiables we booked; they took the most work. Both required a ton of research to find the right fit, not just for our budget, but for our vibe too. It wasn’t easy, but it was 100% worth the effort up front. We’re so glad we put in the time early – we truly couldn’t be happier with our choices and we also made such great memories together finding both. We really embraced the journey and planning process together during this stage.
💌 Month 1 alone can feel like a full-time job. I remember staring at venue contracts at midnight, wondering how I’d plan the next 5 months. That’s why I made this.
I built this 6-month wedding checklist for brides just like you: busy, ambitious, and doing it all without a planner.

Month 2: Lock in the Details
1) Say Yes to the Dress
Order your dress ASAP to allow time for alterations.
2) Create a Wedding Website + Registry
Use affiliate-friendly platforms like Zola or WithJoy for easy setup. (We used WithJoy and it was such a smooth process for us).
3) Book Remaining Vendors
Florist, officiant, hair & makeup, rentals. Consider reaching out to newer vendors who may have last-minute availability.
Confession: I booked our videographer off Instagram two months before the wedding! She was amazing – thank God!
Month 3: Design + Decide
1) Finalize Your Wedding Style
Pick 1–2 core colors or themes. Keep it simple, cohesive, and personal.
3) Order Invitations
Digital invites are a lifesaver if you’re short on time. Minted or Greenvelope are great options.
4) Book Rentals & Decor
Focus on a few impactful items: table linens, signage, lighting.
Month 4: Confirm + Communicate
1) Send Invites + Track RSVPs
Use my wedding checklist or spreadsheet to stay organized.
2) Plan Ceremony + Reception Timeline
Work backwards from your ceremony time and fill in the blocks. (PS. In my complete planning system, I’ve provided a filled-out template for you to start with and edit).
3) Confirm All Vendors
Double-check details and update your timeline.
Real Talk: I almost gave up around Month 4. I was burnt out. Juggling decisions, emails, full-time work… I remember crying at midnight over table layouts and family expectations. That’s when I sat down and built the wedding planning system I couldn’t find anywhere.
